| Owners | Otts & Irma Humm | | | Arthur and Irma Humm purchased the marina in 1948 after Mr. Humm returned from WWII. Together they managed all facets of the business including slip rentals, restaurant, and bar. Mr. Humm is one of the founders of the Ventnor Yacht Club and the Maryland Marine Trade Association. He is still very active in the Rotary Club of Lake Shore and has been named Rotarian of the Year on several occasions. Sadly, Mrs. Humm passed away in January, 2008. Mr. Humm now splits his time between Pasadena and Marco Island, Fl. | | | | Marina Manager | Robin Brashears | | | Robin started on the gas dock at 13 and can occasionally still be found there more than 40 years later. Working in the summer through high school she had planned to attend college full time; but by the end of summer after high school, everyone knew she wasn't going anywhere. Taught all facets of the business by her parents, "on the job training" and pertinent schooling for marine operation, fuel containment, etc. she was ready to manage when they retired. Robin lives in Pasadena with her husband, Wayne, and enjoys gardening and boating when time permits. They are serious football fans and follow the highs and lows of the Ravens in the off season. | | | | Service Manager | Jay Humm | | | After attending the Severn School, Jay enlisted in the Army where he graduated from officers' candidate school in Oklahoma. He volunteered for a tour in Vietnam where he earned a Bronze Star. He was then assigned to Scoffield Barracks in Hawaii and ended his 6 year military career as a Captain.
He returned to the marine business in 1972 and has served as a technician and service manager for over 30 years. His extensive training includes Mercruiser, Volvo, OMC, Pleasurecraft, Crusader, Yamaha, Kohler and others. Certified by Mercruiser in 1982, he received the Master Technician Award in 1985. Over the years, Chesapeake Bay Magazine readers have selected Jay "best mechanic on the Bay". His service department has been given the same recognition and he is very proud of the technicians he has helped develop over the years. Recently married, Jay and JoAnn have settled in Glen Burnie and look forward to a long and happy life together. In the off season, Jay enjoys bird hunting with Molly, our head of security. | | | | Head of Security | Molly | | | Perhaps the most loved member of the Ventnor Marine team, Molly officially meets and greets the customers. This, however, does not lessen her threat as ‘head of security,’ as she will eagerly defend the marina from squirrels, most vehicles, and all manner of unfamiliar pets. She can usually be found roaming the yard scavenging for rags, or comfortably ensconced among her toys. In her spare time, Molly is encouraged to be a good bird dog, but her real talent lies in cuisine sampling. | | | | Technicians | Russ Schellhaas | | | We have been fortunate to have Russ as a member of our crew since 1985, he is in fact our most senior mechanic. He has been a certified Mercruiser technician since 1987 and in 2005 achieved the rank of Master Technician. His extensive marine schooling includes OMC, OMC Cobra and Volvo engines & drive systems, which he updates yearly. Mercruiser EFI systems are his specialty. Additionally, Russ is a certified Volvo Diesel technician and has had formal schooling and “hands on” experience in every aspect of boat repair. As well as his mechanical duties; Russ is the primary travelift operator. With his vast experience, we count on him to help train new employees in the “Ventnor Marine Way” of servicing your boat.
A lifelong resident of Pasadena, Russ with his wife Betty and family are currently building a new home on Bodkin Creek. Russ is now the proud grandfather of little Rylee Nicole born in September, 2008. He is an avid fisherman and crabber and a member of the Bodkin Yacht Club where he and Betty enjoy much of their boating.
| | | | | Jared Perkins | | | Jared started his tenure at Ventnor Marine in March, 2003 as a painter. After we observed an obvious mechanical ability and he expressed an interest in becoming a marine technician, the training process was started. Jared has completed various Mercruiser drive and engine systems training. As the youngest member of the service department, we look forward to a long career with Jared. He and Rachael are expecting their first child in the spring. In his spare time he enjoys boating and fishing. | | | | | Chuck Doran | | | | Chuck is the newest member of the Ventnor Marine crew. After 33 years teaching 7th grade geography at Severna Park Middle School, he retired in 2002. A desire to return to part time employment brought him back to the marina where he works the fuel dock.
An avid runner, he also enjoys fishing, reading, and photography. In memory of his sister, Mike completed a marathon in Alaska in 2003 benefiting the Lukemia Society of Maryland. Mike, his wife Bonita, and their daughter, Kristina, live in Long Point. Mike spends his winters as a part time professor of geography at the Anne Arundel Community College.
